Car

  • Never leave anything on display when you park, even an old coat or bag could tempt a thief

  • Fit electronic engine immobilisers, they prevent your car from starting and are the best way to stop thieves, they should be professionally fitted

  • When parking at home always use your garage if you have one. Lock both car and garage. If you don't have a garage, park in a well-lit, open space

  • When parking outside, try to find a Secure By Design car park, there are several in Havering

  • Use a steering wheel lock when you leave your car

  • Fit a car alarm, they deter thieves from taking your car and stealing items from it

  • Fit locking wheel nuts

  • Etch your car registration number or the last seven digits of your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) onto windows, windscreens and headlamps

  • Security mark all car equipment like stereos with your vehicle registration number

Motorbike/Scooter

  • Get a combined alarm and immobiliser

  • Fit a good disc lock or U-Lock to your bike or scooter

  • Secure your bike to something solid that cannot be moved and keep the lock off the ground - this makes it harder to break

  • Put obvious security markings on as many parts of the bike as possible, the VIN, registration number or your postcode linked to a recognised database

  • If you have a garage use it and lock it

  • Keep keys safe and out of sight

  • Always use a steering lock

  • Don't leave a helmet or other possessions on the bike
