• Fit a safety chain and use it when answering the door to strangers or unexpected callers
• Ask for identification before removing the chain and check carefully
• If in doubt make the caller wait outside and telephone the organisation they claim to represent
• When a utility needs a visit - to read the meter for instance - ask them to make an appointment first
• Remember bogus callers may look and sound very respectable
