Gerpins farmhouse, pronounced Jerpins, used to stand just past the present rubbish tip in Gerpins Lane in the far south of Upminster parish. Ted Ballard relates how the Mitchell family, occupiers at the turn of the century, placed gin traps inside their boundary walls to protect their orchards and house from trespassers and intruders.
