Press Release May 2008 Contact: Benjamin Sanderson More Local Nature Reserves for Havering ‘Have your say!’ After receiving an enthusiastic response from Councillors and local residents at April’s Local Area Committee meeting in Upminster there will now be the opportunity for you to have your say about two new proposed Local Nature Reserves at Cranham Brickfields and Cranham Marsh. The declaration of four new Local Nature Reserves forms part of Havering Borough Council’s Local Area Agreement with the Government. Local Nature Reserves are essentially for both people and wildlife. They are places that are of special interest locally and give people opportunities to have contact with nature. With the Local Nature Reserve designation comes better protection, more opportunities for external funding and a commitment by us as a Local Authority to maintain the sites special interest. The Council, along with the support and involvement of local residents, has already been successful in designating three other Local Nature Reserves. These are The Manor at Harold Hill covering Dagnam Park and Duck Wood, The Chase at Rush Green and The Ingrebourne Valley covering Hornchurch Country Park and the adjacent marshes and designated Site of Special Scientific Interest under Council ownership. We are now seeking your views on designating council owned land at Cranham Brickfields and Cranham Marsh as Local Nature Reserves. We know these areas are already popular with local residents who use them for walking and informal recreation. The sites are also great for wildlife with important habitats such as woodlands and wildflower meadows and animals including bats, great crested newts and water voles. It is hoped the Local Nature Reserve designation will ensure that the features of special interest are protected for future generations. To find out more about these proposed Local Nature Reserves we will be holding a public event at Cranham Brickfields from 10am until 1pm on Saturday 14th June (See location plan). It is as important for us to find out more about the history and wildlife of these sites as it is for you to come along and talk to us about how you would like to see them managed. As well as a chance to come along and have a chat with us there will be refreshments available, guided walks and children’s activities so it should be an enjoyable morning for everyone.
